The Sources of the Seine

Place de la Porte de Saint-Cloud, 75016 Paris 1936

10 meters high and 4 meters in diameter, these two Fountains stand in the center of the square that marks one of the gates of Paris. The bas-reliefs covering them – in an art deco style that’s rare for Landowski – depict country life and city life respectively. Their crowns show the cities and regions the Seine flows through. The water spouts show commedia characters (Pierrot and Colombine) and animal motifs. We also find the artist’s only self-portrait. These fountains were originally intended to be made of glass. They are no longer in operation for reasons of conservation.
