Sainte-Genevieve

Sainte-Geneviève

Pont de la Tournelle, 75004 Paris 1928

It’s hard to get a good look at this immense statue (5.4 meters) where it’s perched atop a 14-meter-high structure – a bane for Landowski. The Saint protects a child holding a boat which symbolizes the city of Paris. She protects the city from potential invaders, as the commission specified, though Landowski wanted her positioned lower and facing Notre Dame. It was a heated debate, but in the end, the sculptor was forced to comply to the wishes of the authorities. More info here.
