Piratini palace, Porto-Alegre, Brazil 1912

This work and its counterpart, Agriculture, guard the entrance into the Piratini Palace courtyard. The 2-meter tall sculpture marks Landowski’s exploration into the simplicity of forms, breaking with the allegorical figures of his master Barrias. The palace, home of the Executive Power of Rio Grande do Sul, was meant to celebrate the power of State. It was built by Maurice Gras.
