The Phantoms Les Fantômes Oulchy-le-Château (Aisne), Butte de Chalmont, France 1935 Monument commemorating the Battle of the Marne. This huge monument (8m x 8.60m x 4.30m) rises up from the landscape that was ravaged by WWI, artificially restored by a long series of stairs leading from the statue of France, alongside the road, to these dead soldiers that Landowski wanted to “raise” from the trenches where he’d seen them lying. It took him 15 years to perfect this granite work which was inaugurated in 1935.
